Dietary supplements offer an easy and effective way to provide your body with optimum levels of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids it needs. A body that has all the necessary building blocks for good cellular function is better at fighting off health problems.
Risk vs. Benefit
If you have a health condition such as high cholesterol, or if you have a family history of a problem like osteoporosis (brittle bones), then your choice of how to address that condition should be a matter of risk versus benefit.
While some of today’s conventional drugs really are wonder drugs, they may not be necessary for every person with underlying health issues. And if those drugs are deemed necessary by a physician, the use of vitamins and supplements in addition to those drugs can sometimes make them more effective. Vitamins also have the benefit of causing far fewer side effects.
Power of Prevention
We have a lot more power than many of us realize when it comes to fighting off conditions like heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer. If nothing else, taking a high-quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with enough calcium and magnesium is a very easy step to add to your daily routine. The potential benefits can be great, and the disadvantages are minimal.
When you go shopping for health supplements, you’ll not only be faced with choosing which supplements to get, but what form you want to take them in. Tablets, capsules, gel-caps, powders, and liquids are the forms in which supplements are available. Your choice is largely a matter of personal preference.
Tablets, Powders, Liquids, Capsules, All you can find at canadian pharmacy shop
A lot of people have the idea that capsules are better than tablets because they dissolve better, but in truth a well-manufactured tablet works just as well and usually costs less.
Some argue that capsules contain fewer additives, and in some cases this may be true, but it’s certainly not true in all cases.
Most of the time, choosing a capsule versus a tablet comes down to which you find easier to swallow. Many people find capsules easier to swallow because of their smooth outer covering.
Some types of dietary supplements are simply easier to administer in the form of a powder or a liquid. For example, powdered protein supplements are made to be mixed with liquids and then drunk.
Fibre supplements are often in powdered form too, and they are commonly mixed with juice or other liquid so that it is easier to take the required amount in a way that is pleasant to consume.
Powdered vitamin supplements are available, and many people prefer these because of the ease of mixing them with foods or drinks.
During their hospitalisation, patients that are provided with oral nutrition supplements appear to have shorter hospital stays and lower health care costs according to an economic research study. This study took place at the University of Chicago by a team led by Tomas Phillipson and backed by Abbott Nutrition. This study analyzed over a million adult hospital stays, and noted that nutritional intervention lowered the length of the hospital stay for around 21 percent of these candidates.
This translates to an approximate 2.3 day reduction in hospital stays and around $4,734 in savings or 21.6 percent on health care costs for these individuals.
In addition to offering these basic savings, the addition of nutritional supplement to the patients’ treatment routines reduced the 30 day readmission for patients with a minimum of one subsequent readmission by 6.7 percent. These findings were presented to the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism at their congress in Leipzig, Germany. These findings were also published in the American Journal of Managed Care.
Patients that have known nutritional deficiencies tend to have a longer and more difficult recovery which can in turn lead to higher health care costs to treat these individuals. This can also increase the complication rates associated with these individuals. The study indicates that providing oral nutritional supplements can provide economic benefits and improving patient outcomes by lowering this recovery time. In addition to focusing on the health economics associated with this issue, this research has moved to focus on studying how economic analysis can find a way to use nutritional therapy as a way to increase the overall value of the health care system.
Researchers in charge of this study primarily focused on retrospective data analysis as a way of determining how providing oral nutritional supplements to patients would affect the hospital stays of these individuals. This was performed by comparing the hospital stays of those that were not provided supplements during their stay as opposed to those that were encouraged to take these nutritional offerings.
Samples included 1,160,088 episodes, 580,044 of which did not receive supplements and 580,044 of which did, where nutritional supplements were offered, noting the length of the hospital stay and the total cost of deprecation of equipment, supplies and labour associated with treating these people. The probability that these individuals would be readmitted within 30 days was also noted in these findings.
Analysis of these figures showed that those that received oral supplements had a shorter stay in the hospital at 2.3-8.6 days compared to the average 10.9 experienced by those that did not receive supplements. The total health care costs also dropped after administering nutritional supplements to these patients. The total cost of care dropped from $21,950 to $17,216 on average.
During additional studies, the number of samples was restricted to 862,960 patients that were at some point readmitted to the hospital. This sample showed that those that had not received supplements had a 2.3 percent increase in the risk that they would reenter the hospital within 30 days.
Some very exciting news for those with cognitive difficulties and chronic depression were revealed from the University of Bergen in Norway by researchers at the Department of Biomedicine and K. G. Jebsen Centre for Research on Neuropsychiatric Disorders this week.
Concerned about the increase of patients diagnosed with cognitive problems and behaviour similar to depression-based disorders, genetic research has been seeking ways to correct these problems with supplements that increases genetic response for brain activity. The researchers proceeded with a study comparing rats receiving a daily dose of Krill Oil supplements to a group receiving no supplements and a second group receiving equivalent doses of a popularly prescribed antidepressant medication.
Why Krill Oil vs. Other Omega-3
The particularity of the Omega-3 fatty acids found in krill oil has a higher level of EPA and DHA. Research data for many years has proven that EPA and DHA have a positive effect on cardiovascular activity and produces some anti-inflammatory results. Knowing that the brain is composed of an abundance of DHA lipids, researchers in Norway theorised that supplements containing both sources of fatty acids found in krill may be beneficial to brain functions, as well.
While fish oil does contain high levels of both lipids, the manner in which the two create bonds with corresponding elements in the brain differs greatly. Krill oil protects the bonding from disintegrating effects in part due to being a natural anti-oxidant. As a result, krill oil has a longer lasting impact on the cell membranes enabling the brain to trigger positive mood changes, increased attention spans, faster reactive times and improved cognition.
Krill Oil; Results on Memory, Observation and Analysis Skills
The ALSAT uses bursts of light as signaling devices to direct behavioural responses with light-sensitive animals. The increased ability to observe, recognise and discriminate between active and inactive switches was considerably better among rats that had received daily doses of krill oil compared to both control groups.
While in the short term, both the krill oil and medication had similar effects on increased learning, observation accuracy and length of memory, the longer that both groups were on the respective substances, differences in alert responses became evident. The krill oil group became more alert and learning skills continued to increase. Those rats on the medication began to show signs of lethargy, which in turn inhibited learning, memory retention and signal interpretation.
Perhaps even more significant is the fact that tests revealed that lack of the Omega-3 fatty acids found specifically in krill oil can elevate depression and increase aggressive responses to misinterpreted signals.
We are often told that we should eat oily fish or take a fish oil supplement, but why? And when supplementing, which one do you choose?
Why do you need fish oil?
Essential Fatty Acids are so named as we must include them in our diet as the body needs them for many important functions but cannot make them.
The omega-3 essential fats, EPA and DHA, are mostly found in oily fish such as sardines and anchovies and have been shown to have a wide variety of health benefits.
How much fish oil do you need?
To maintain healthy levels of essential fats, the government recommends that we all eat at least two portions of oily fish each week but this can be difficult to achieve through diet alone, especially if you don’t like to eat fish! A good quality fish oil supplement can be a great option to ensure levels are high enough to maintain good health.
How do you know if a supplement is good quality?
Here are a few tips when looking for a good quality fish oil supplement:
• Look for a fish oil supplement that is produced from small fish such as anchovies and sardines as the levels of essential fats within these fish are naturally more concentrated. You will therefore get better quality oil.
• Look at where the fish are sourced. Small fish sourced from areas such as the clear pacific waters will drastically minimise the level of pollutants. This will mean you will get cleaner, more pure oil.
• Look for oil that has had minimal processing. Fatty acids are delicate and can become damaged when put through aggressive production methods. If minimal heat and chemicals are used, the oil will be closer to its natural form.
• Look for variety. If fish oil is pure and clean, then it can be made into capsules and liquids that have very little fishy aftertaste. Some fish oils can even be mixed with fruit bases so that adults and children can enjoy taking a daily supplement.

‘LAB4’ blend of probiotics has been used extensively in several well-designed and high profile clinical trials showing benefits for some of the negative effects of antibiotic use.
Antibiotic Therapy Study
Supplementation with LAB4 probiotics helped maintain the balance of the gut microflora following 7 days of antibiotic therapy and reduced the overgrowth of Coliforms, Enterococci and Staphylococcus aureus.
155 patients over 21 days, found that daily supplementation with LAB4 significantly reduced incidence and total numbers of antibiotic resistant strains after antibiotic therapy (>70%) and inhibited overgrowth of Candida albicans.
138 patients requiring antibiotic therapy for C. difficile found that supplementation of LAB4 probiotics for 20 days significantly reduced C. difficile associated diarrhoea compared to placebo.
LAB4 Irritable Bowel Syndrome Study
52 people diagnosed with IBS divided into two groups. One group supplemented daily for 8 weeks with LAB4. Second group took a placebo. IBS symptoms assessed every two weeks during the study period and at 10 weeks. LAB4 significantly reduced the total IBS symptoms in the subjects compared to those taking the placebo.
Regularly consuming bakery products which are flaxseed fortified has been shown to lower blood pressure levels in those with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). New data revealed at the November 2012 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions helps back these claims.
Researchers from the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) at St. Boniface Hospital revealed a significant decrease in diastolic and systolic blood pressure from 10 and 7 mmHg after patients consumed buns, bagels or muffins rich in flaxseed.
This is the largest blood pressure decrease associated with dietary intervention, according to Dr. Grant Pierce, lead researcher. The results show a higher decrease in blood pressure than low-sodium diets or the Mediterranean diet.
“We expect that this kind of improvement in people with hypertension could reduce their incidence of heart attack and stroke by 50 percent,” Pierce continued.
Details of the Study
110 patients with documented cases of PAD were recruited by researchers. These patients were randomly assigned to groups requiring them to eat buns, muffins or bagels containing 30 grams of milled flaxseed per day, or a group that consumed placebo products made with wheat. These wheat products were similar in flavor to the products containing the flaxseed. Testing continued for one year.
PAD patients with hypertension were found to have a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure levels, totaling around 15 mm Hg compared to the placebo group, according to Pierce.
“Flaxseed has different components, including alpha-linolenic acid, enterolignans, and fiver, and all have been shown to decrease blood pressure. We think we are seeing a synergistic effect of different compounds,” Piece went on to say.
Spokesmen for Glanbia Nutritionals, the company supplying flaxseed products for the study, reported that a paper on the topic is in the process of being submitted to a peer-review journal. The process should be completed within three months. At this point, a three year study is being planned to narrow down which bioactive compounds are the cause of these BP lowering effects, and how the synergies affect these totals.
President of the Flax Council of Canada William Hill added that consumers have embraced the use of flax for decades, but were not necessarily aware of the health benefits associated with the food. Hill noted that the scientific support this study would provide will help back claims nutritionists and the flax industry have been making about their product and its impact on the health of individuals for decades.
The results of new research recently published by Nutrition Research link higher blood levels of vitamin B6 and coenzyme Q10 to a lower incidence of coronary artery disease.
The research showed a correlation between individuals suffering from coronary artery disease and low blood levels of both nutrients. As coronary artery disease is among the leading causes of death globally, more research is necessary to find out if those suffering from the disease would benefit from vitamin supplementation.
The study, carried out by researchers in Taiwan, looked at 87 healthy subjects and 45 suffering from coronary artery disease. Researchers measured blood levels of both nutrients, and the group with coronary artery disease were consistently found to have significantly lower blood levels of both vitamin B6 and coenzyme Q10.
Water-soluble vitamin B6 is an essential nutrient found in many foods including meat, vegetables, nuts and pulses. The vitamin is crucial for proper enzyme function in the human body, as well as playing a significant role in the production of haemoglobin, in supporting the immune system and regulation of hormones within the body.
Coenzyme Q10 participates in adenosine triphosphate production, making it vital for maintaining chemical energy levels in cells, and it has already been proven to be of benefit to people suffering from related conditions such as hypertension and angina, and has been studied intensively in relation to heart health and disorders related to aging.
As age is a significant risk factor in the development of coronary artery disease, the discovery of a link between Coenzyme Q10 and the disease could be a vital factor influencing future management of patients with coronary artery disease. Aging in general puts the body under higher levels of oxidative stress; leading to loss of coenzyme Q10, which also reduces the activity of antioxidant enzymes.
However, although both nutrients were found at lower levels in the group suffering from coronary artery disease, vitamin B6 was not found to be statistically significant after other variables were accounted for. Despite this loss in statistical significance for vitamin B6, the nutrient plays a vital role in the uptake and synthesis of coenzyme Q10, as well as significantly decreasing concentration of the amino acid homocysteine, which is unchanged in patients receiving coenzyme Q10 alone. For this reason it is thought that providing vitamin B6 supplements in addition to Coenzyme Q10 may be beneficial.
These encouraging findings demonstrating a correlation between vitamin B6, coenzyme Q10 and coronary artery disease indicate that supplements of these nutrients may be useful in preventing and managing the disease. However, more research is required in this area in order to prove that the supplements are beneficial to those either suffering or at risk of coronary artery disease before supplements can be incorporated into the clinical guidelines for treatment of these individuals.
Everyone knows that drinking plenty of water is advised as a way to remain healthy and rid the body of toxic build up. Though, nowadays, with all the pollutants and bacteria that are present in the air and the food that we eat, normal tap water is not as healthy as it used to be. Tap water is generally very acidic and, seeing as acidic build up is damaging to the body, what we really need is alkaline drinking water.
How Can We Get Alkaline Water
The easiest way to get alkaline drinking water into your home is by using an alkaline water ionizer machine which will separate the regular tap water into two different streams – acidic and alkaline. These types of machines are available in a few different varieties. There are jug like filters which allow you to filter tap water in the jug before use. These are very affordable and useful filters, though they need to have the filter changed regularly and do not filter a lot of water at one time. There are types of alkaline water machine which you can have included directly into your plumbing system; these allow you have a separate tap which provides a constant supply of alkaline water.
Drinking alkaline water has many different benefits to your health. It is a natural antioxidant which works to detoxify the body and get rid of a build up of acidity and toxins in the body. Alkaline drinking water has a higher amount of oxygen which allows the fluids in the body to work better and create more energy and better circulation. As well as increasing out energy levels, increased oxygen levels work at increasing the hydrating effect the water has on the body. This allows for a better defence against signs of aging such as sagging skin and wrinkles.
How to choose you Alkaline Drinking Machine
It is important to make sure you get a good quality and genuine product. Some water machines use chemicals in order to treat the water and these are not the kind of filtration systems you want to have. You need to make sure that the machine you choose is recommended by health institutions and has met all the standards that are required by the health and safety agencies. They are easily found on the internet and in most department or household stores worldwide. There are so many alkaline water benefits that it is one of the most invaluable assets to the home that someone can have in the modern world.
It is no secret that eating greens, that is fruits and vegetables, is the key to experience optimum health. The best treatment that our bodies can get is if it is fed on fresh and natural greens, which can be derived by juicing.
Juicing Great for Kids Health
Preparing fresh juice from a juicer caters even for those people, especially children, who do not like eating raw or cooked vegetables. Consuming plenty of juice made from the right juicer machine has plenty of benefits for the body. One such benefit is that it enables the body to digest essential nutrients with much ease.
This is especially true for people who have a less than optimal digestive system. A masticating juicer operates efficiently and ensures the fruit or vegetable’s cell wall is properly broken down so that the body receives all the essential nutrients.
Using the Appropriate Juice Maker
Another reason why you should practise daily juicing is that it provides the body with important nutrients especially when a masticating juicer is used instead of a centrifugal juicer. These enzymes are important since they help to detoxify, cleanse the body and aid in food digestion. Enzymes are not conducive to hot temperature and by cooking the vegetables, large amounts of these enzymes are destroyed. This also takes place when using a centrifugal machine, which produces plenty of heat, thus killing enzymes.
Increased Chlorophyll Amount
Making juice from a juicer machine is a good way of giving the body chlorophyll, which forms part of our body’s building blocks. The benefit of chlorophyll to the body is that it increases oxygen flow to the internal body organs.
The increase of oxygen is responsible for removing toxins and carbon dioxide from the body. In addition, having plenty of oxygen makes the body more aerobic reducing the chances of an individual falling ill.
Extract all Nutrients
Fresh fruits and vegetables contain trace minerals needed for the body to function properly. It is only through juicing that one can get all nutrients present in vegetables and fruits. These nutrients are essential in helping the body fight diseases and cause it to become healthier. In a nut shell, juicing increases your ability to consume essential nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables.

Are you suffering from joint pain? You do not have to, there are some very good supplements on the market today that will give you joint pain relief. These supplements are not pain killers but give natural pain relief for both the symptoms and causes of painful joints.
Will Taking Vitamins and Minerals Help Reduce Joint Pain?
One of the first things you should begin to take for knee pain relief are multivitamins. Sometimes joint pain is caused by excess free radicals that cause inflammation and pain.
The vitamins and minerals will get your body back into a nutritional balance and reduce the free radicals. Another very good supplement to give you joint pain relief is fish oil. This is also very high in Omega 3 fatty acids which are very good for your brain.
Can I Replace Substances That Naturally Occur in My Body to Reduce the Pain?
The next common supplement to relieve joint pain is Glucosamine. This is a naturally occurring substance in the body that stimulates cartilage growth. As we age, the levels of Glucosamine and cartilage in our bodies begin to dissipate. Supplemental Glucosamine mainly comes from shellfish and will help you to reduce joint pain and rebuild cartilage.
The supplement is available in many forms: Glucosamine hydrochloride, Glucosamine sulfate, and N-act-Glucosamine. There is much discussion as to which one of these works better. Glucosamine sulfate has been much more researched and has the largest base of consumers.
Another naturally occurring substance in our body is Chondroitin Sulfate. This substance is an important structural component of cartilage and is also thought to assist in cartilage repair and help to alleviate knee pain for example.
Like Glucosamine, the Chondroitin levels in our bodies decline with age. When the Chondroitin levels drop, it leads to pain and stiffness in the joints. The supplemental Chondroitin comes from cows or shark cartilage.
This supplement has been proven to be effective in knee pain relief, giving the person more flexibility and slow the progression of osteoarthritis.
The last substance to help ease joint pain is Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM. This is a naturally occurring substance found in the body. MSM is essential for making collagen, which will make up cartilage.
The levels of MSM will drop as one ages, causing loss of cartilage and joint stiffness and pain. The supplemental MSM is derived from plants. This supplement has proven to help with painful joints and work as an anti-inflammatory agent as well as assisting in the formation of cartilage.
All of these substances work very well to help you with joint pain; you should take the multi vitamins, with one of the other supplements mentioned above.
