During their hospitalisation, patients that are provided with oral nutrition supplements appear to have shorter hospital stays and lower health care costs according to an economic research study. This study took place at the University of Chicago by a team led by Tomas Phillipson and backed by Abbott Nutrition. This study analyzed over a million adult hospital stays, and noted that nutritional intervention lowered the length of the hospital stay for around 21 percent of these candidates.

This translates to an approximate 2.3 day reduction in hospital stays and around $4,734 in savings or 21.6 percent on health care costs for these individuals.
In addition to offering these basic savings, the addition of nutritional supplement to the patients’ treatment routines reduced the 30 day readmission for patients with a minimum of one subsequent readmission by 6.7 percent. These findings were presented to the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism at their congress in Leipzig, Germany. These findings were also published in the American Journal of Managed Care.

Patient Nutrition

Patients that have known nutritional deficiencies tend to have a longer and more difficult recovery which can in turn lead to higher health care costs to treat these individuals. This can also increase the complication rates associated with these individuals. The study indicates that providing oral nutritional supplements can provide economic benefits and improving patient outcomes by lowering this recovery time. In addition to focusing on the health economics associated with this issue, this research has moved to focus on studying how economic analysis can find a way to use nutritional therapy as a way to increase the overall value of the health care system.

Study Details

Researchers in charge of this study primarily focused on retrospective data analysis as a way of determining how providing oral nutritional supplements to patients would affect the hospital stays of these individuals. This was performed by comparing the hospital stays of those that were not provided supplements during their stay as opposed to those that were encouraged to take these nutritional offerings.

Samples included 1,160,088 episodes, 580,044 of which did not receive supplements and 580,044 of which did, where nutritional supplements were offered, noting the length of the hospital stay and the total cost of deprecation of equipment, supplies and labour associated with treating these people. The probability that these individuals would be readmitted within 30 days was also noted in these findings.

Analysis of these figures showed that those that received oral supplements had a shorter stay in the hospital at 2.3-8.6 days compared to the average 10.9 experienced by those that did not receive supplements. The total health care costs also dropped after administering nutritional supplements to these patients. The total cost of care dropped from $21,950 to $17,216 on average.

During additional studies, the number of samples was restricted to 862,960 patients that were at some point readmitted to the hospital. This sample showed that those that had not received supplements had a 2.3 percent increase in the risk that they would reenter the hospital within 30 days.

Some very exciting news for those with cognitive difficulties and chronic depression were revealed from the University of Bergen in Norway by researchers at the Department of Biomedicine and K. G. Jebsen Centre for Research on Neuropsychiatric Disorders this week.

Concerned about the increase of patients diagnosed with cognitive problems and behaviour similar to depression-based disorders, genetic research has been seeking ways to correct these problems with supplements that increases genetic response for brain activity. The researchers proceeded with a study comparing rats receiving a daily dose of Krill Oil supplements to a group receiving no supplements and a second group receiving equivalent doses of a popularly prescribed antidepressant medication.

Why Krill Oil vs. Other Omega-3

The particularity of the Omega-3 fatty acids found in krill oil has a higher level of EPA and DHA.  Research data for many years has proven that EPA and DHA have a positive effect on cardiovascular activity and produces some anti-inflammatory results.  Knowing that the brain is composed of an abundance of DHA lipids, researchers in Norway theorised that supplements containing both sources of fatty acids found in krill may be beneficial to brain functions, as well.

While fish oil does contain high levels of both lipids, the manner in which the two create bonds with corresponding elements in the brain differs greatly.  Krill oil protects the bonding from disintegrating effects in part due to being a natural anti-oxidant.  As a result, krill oil has a longer lasting impact on the cell membranes enabling the brain to trigger positive mood changes, increased attention spans, faster reactive times and improved cognition.

Krill Oil; Results on Memory, Observation and Analysis Skills

The ALSAT uses bursts of light as signaling devices to direct behavioural responses with light-sensitive animals.  The increased ability to observe, recognise and discriminate between active and inactive switches was considerably better among rats that had received daily doses of krill oil compared to both control groups.

While in the short term, both the krill oil and medication had similar effects on increased learning, observation accuracy and length of memory, the longer that both groups were on the respective substances, differences in alert responses became evident.  The krill oil group became more alert and learning skills continued to increase.  Those rats on the medication began to show signs of lethargy, which in turn inhibited learning, memory retention and signal interpretation.

Perhaps even more significant is the fact that tests revealed that lack of the Omega-3 fatty acids found specifically in krill oil can elevate depression and increase aggressive responses to misinterpreted signals.

Antibiotic Therapy Study

Supplementation with LAB4 probiotics helped maintain the balance of the gut microflora following 7 days of antibiotic therapy and reduced the overgrowth of Coliforms, Enterococci and Staphylococcus aureus.

Antibiotic Resistance

155 patients over 21 days, found that daily supplementation with LAB4 significantly reduced incidence and total numbers of antibiotic resistant strains after antibiotic therapy (>70%) and inhibited overgrowth of Candida albicans.

Regularly consuming bakery products which are flaxseed fortified has been shown to lower blood pressure levels in those with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). New data revealed at the November 2012 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions helps back these claims.

Researchers from the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM) at St. Boniface Hospital revealed a significant decrease in diastolic and systolic blood pressure from 10 and 7 mmHg after patients consumed buns, bagels or muffins rich in flaxseed.

This is the largest blood pressure decrease associated with dietary intervention, according to Dr. Grant Pierce, lead researcher. The results show a higher decrease in blood pressure than low-sodium diets or the Mediterranean diet.
“We expect that this kind of improvement in people with hypertension could reduce their incidence of heart attack and stroke by 50 percent,” Pierce continued.

Details of the Study

110 patients with documented cases of PAD were recruited by researchers. These patients were randomly assigned to groups requiring them to eat buns, muffins or bagels containing 30 grams of milled flaxseed per day, or a group that consumed placebo products made with wheat. These wheat products were similar in flavor to the products containing the flaxseed. Testing continued for one year.
PAD patients with hypertension were found to have a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure levels, totaling around 15 mm Hg compared to the placebo group, according to Pierce.

“Flaxseed has different components, including alpha-linolenic acid, enterolignans, and fiver, and all have been shown to decrease blood pressure. We think we are seeing a synergistic effect of different compounds,” Piece went on to say.

Spokesmen for Glanbia Nutritionals, the company supplying flaxseed products for the study, reported that a paper on the topic is in the process of being submitted to a peer-review journal. The process should be completed within three months. At this point, a three year study is being planned to narrow down which bioactive compounds are the cause of these BP lowering effects, and how the synergies affect these totals.

President of the Flax Council of Canada William Hill added that consumers have embraced the use of flax for decades, but were not necessarily aware of the health benefits associated with the food. Hill noted that the scientific support this study would provide will help back claims nutritionists and the flax industry have been making about their product and its impact on the health of individuals for decades.

The results of new research recently published by Nutrition Research link higher blood levels of vitamin B6 and coenzyme Q10 to a lower incidence of coronary artery disease.

The research showed a correlation between individuals suffering from coronary artery disease and low blood levels of both nutrients. As coronary artery disease is among the leading causes of death globally, more research is necessary to find out if those suffering from the disease would benefit from vitamin supplementation.

The study, carried out by researchers in Taiwan, looked at 87 healthy subjects and 45 suffering from coronary artery disease. Researchers measured blood levels of both nutrients, and the group with coronary artery disease were consistently found to have significantly lower blood levels of both vitamin B6 and coenzyme Q10.

Water-soluble vitamin B6 is an essential nutrient found in many foods including meat, vegetables, nuts and pulses. The vitamin is crucial for proper enzyme function in the human body, as well as playing a significant role in the production of haemoglobin, in supporting the immune system and regulation of hormones within the body.

Coenzyme Q10 participates in adenosine triphosphate production, making it vital for maintaining chemical energy levels in cells, and it has already been proven to be of benefit to people suffering from related conditions such as hypertension and angina, and has been studied intensively in relation to heart health and disorders related to aging.

As age is a significant risk factor in the development of coronary artery disease, the discovery of a link between Coenzyme Q10 and the disease could be a vital factor influencing future management of patients with coronary artery disease. Aging in general puts the body under higher levels of oxidative stress; leading to loss of coenzyme Q10, which also reduces the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

However, although both nutrients were found at lower levels in the group suffering from coronary artery disease, vitamin B6 was not found to be statistically significant after other variables were accounted for. Despite this loss in statistical significance for vitamin B6, the nutrient plays a vital role in the uptake and synthesis of coenzyme Q10, as well as significantly decreasing concentration of the amino acid homocysteine, which is unchanged in patients receiving coenzyme Q10 alone. For this reason it is thought that providing vitamin B6 supplements in addition to Coenzyme Q10 may be beneficial.

These encouraging findings demonstrating a correlation between vitamin B6, coenzyme Q10 and coronary artery disease indicate that supplements of these nutrients may be useful in preventing and managing the disease. However, more research is required in this area in order to prove that the supplements are beneficial to those either suffering or at risk of coronary artery disease before supplements can be incorporated into the clinical guidelines for treatment of these individuals.
